Event description

PRIDE GROWS is a roving Landcare group for Canberra's nature-loving LGBTQIA+ community! It's a safe and supportive space to meet new people whilst actively caring for the environment.
When was the last time you toiled in the soil?

Come down to the Diversity ACT community hub in Kambah on Sunday 21st July to learn all about wicking bed garden design!

Wicking beds are self-contained with a reservoir in the bottom. Water is stored/ready for when plants need it and is drawn up like a wick by capillary action. This approach reduces evaporation from the surface and prevents drying-out which equals less stress to our beloved plants. Wicking beds allow moisture to distribute more evenly through the soil meaning you don’t need to water them as regularly! This makes them a fantastic addition to community gardens because it reduces the burden of frequent watering (once plants are established) and means that during summer plants are more likely to survive a few days with less frequent attention.

There'll be a working demonstration followed by a planting session. If time allows, we'll also rejuvenate some of the surrounding garden beds with a focus on planting for pollinators.
Sally Holliday from Landcare ACT will lead the group in some deepening nature connection activities. Lunch will be provided from 1pm. Event concludes at 2pm.
