Wild Clay Harvest Processing

Wild Clay Harvest & Processing is a hands-on workshop exploring the journey of clay from landscape to material. Participants will begin by visiting a local site to identify, extract, and respectfully harvest wild clay. Returning to the studio, the group will work through the full processing cycle—crushing, slaking, sieving, tempering, and preparing the clay for use. Each participant will create up to five test tiles to assess the clay’s properties and suitability for functional or sculptural applications. The workshop provides a practical understanding of how raw, site-specific materials can be transformed into a workable medium for ceramics. Suitable for all levels.

About the Artist
Ben is a ceramic artist with over 30 years of experience, specializing in functional works including handcrafted sink basins and dinnerware. In recent years, his practice has focused on harvesting and processing wild clay, investigating the relationship between material, place, and form. His approach combines technical knowledge with a strong emphasis on locality and sustainable material sourcing.

Materials and Equipment
The workshop includes access to a clay harvesting site and shared tools such as shovels, crushing and sifting equipment, rollers, clay boards, sand, and bentonite. Firing of test tiles is included.

Additional Information
Suitable for all skill levels. Participants will walk to a local clay site, so a basic level of mobility is required. Please bring personal protective equipment (PPE), a shovel or spade if available, water, and lunch. Wear appropriate clothing and closed-toe shoes suitable for outdoor and studio work. Test tiles will be fired after the workshop to evaluate the clay’s functional potential.
