Wild Mushroom Hunt March 20th
Event description
You are invited to come to a wild edible mushroom hunt! It is the beginning of the foraging season in cool climate pine forests around Sydney and the delicacies found there are highly prized by the best Australian chefs.Â
Joining a guided mushroom foraging tour with an experienced forager is a great opportunity to learn how to find, pick and process wild edible mushrooms.
We meet at Hampton beyond the Blue Mountains and from there go to pine forests along Jenolan Caves Road to harvest precious nature's gift - wild mushrooms, blackberries and roadside apples.
You will learn how to identify and collect edible mushrooms, process them to cook a scrumptious lunch and see how to preserve the bounty. Your guide will teach you how to safely recognise and pick them, and will run a safety check of your basket.
Also included in the ticket price are:
- fresh barbecue lunch made from the day’s bounty
- mini-workshop on preserving mushrooms: a great opportunity to learn about cleaning, drying, pickling and fermenting
- fact sheet about the two species of mushrooms we will be looking for (emailed after you book your ticket)
- recipes for preserving mushrooms
(children under 12 only $5 for lunch, paid in cash on the day)
You will return home not only with what you found, but also with confidence to safely recognise two varieties of wild edible mushrooms and knowledge about how to preserve them. What you learn at the tour will allow you to go to the pine forests to collect these mushrooms by yourself in years to come!
