Session Three — Plant: Hacks to Plant Your Habitat

You’ve planned with intention. Now it’s time to put plants in the ground. 🪴

Session Three of Wilder by Design: Hacks for Habitat moves from design into action. In this session, Master Naturalist Anna Graether helps participants focus on a single planting area and learn how to build a resilient, wildlife-supportive habitat—one layer at a time.

Rather than trying to do everything at once, this session emphasizes strategic planting: choosing the right plants for the right place and understanding how different plant roles work together to support pollinators, birds, and beneficial insects throughout the growing season.

What You’ll Learn

• How to select keystone plants that support the greatest number of species

• The role of specialist host plants in sustaining insect and bird populations

• How to use filler plants to strengthen habitat and suppress weeds

• How to plan for a sequence of bloom times that provides food and shelter year-round

This session is designed to help you move from ideas to confident action—creating habitat that is both ecologically functional and visually cohesive.

About the Presenter

Anna Graether is a Johnson County Extension Master Naturalist, Board Member of The Resilient Activist, and Nature Advisor with Deep Roots KC. Her approach to habitat gardening centers on thoughtful plant selection, ecological relationships, and taking meaningful steps without overwhelm.
