Event description

Join us for an adventure with a short hike, entertaining stories, survival strategies, and a build-your-own survival kit activity. Ages 5+ (all youth must be accompanied by an adult).

Dr. Justin Lenzi is the Director of Education at Joshua Tree National Park Association. He has been teaching in elementary and middle school for 15 years and has a passion for science education. Justin is also an Eagle Scout with a lot of experience with wilderness survival and first aid. In collaboration with Desert Institute Manager Benazir Erdahl, they are excited to facilitate a fun, practical, and memorable class.

Have you ever wondered how people survive outdoors, in the desert, or in extreme weather? Join us for an adventure with a short hike, entertaining stories, survival strategies, and a build-your-own survival kit activity. We will read a map, use a compass, discuss basic first aid, and learn what to do when we encounter wildlife. This class is for youth (5+) and families. Content and activities will be accessible to elementary, middle, and high school students. All youth participants must be accompanied by an adult.

All required items participants need to bring for your course: water, food and snacks, easily packed and eaten in the field (please leave no trace), close-toed athletic shoes or hiking boots; no sandals, not even hiking sandals, sun protection: hat, sunglasses, sunscreen; light-colored long-sleeved shirts are recommended and very effective on hot days, warm layers in case of cold weather, dackpack to carry food, water, and any personal items you need for the day
