Wildlife of the Night – Spotlighting

Most of Australia’s small mammals are nocturnal with approximately 70% of all Australian mammal species active after dark and the best time to see them is at night.
One of the best ways to see them is to go spotlighting at night.
Here in Inverloch, we are fortunate to have a unique habitat that is home to many interesting animals.
You will have the opportunity to see our local Strzelecki Koalas, possums, native bush rats and water rats, owls (can be spotted once their calls are heard), gliders, wombats, and micro bats, which emerge at or after dusk to forage.
The walk is an easy stroll through the amazing Screw Creek and Anderson Inlet area of Inverloch. Being wildlife, you can never predict which animals you will see and photograph on the walk.
We can also do a little bit of Astronomy weather permitting.

About this event

Join an Education Officer at Bunurong Coast Education, to go on a guided night walk and search for nocturnal animals and find out what goes on out in the bush after the sun goes down.

Meet at the Bunurong Environment Centre, 1 Ramsey Boulevard, Inverloch. Following an introduction to the activity and a safety briefing the group will go to Screw Creek Reserve (end of The Esplanade) in Inverloch (about three kilometres away) for a night walk.
Participants will need their own transport. Warm protective clothing may be advisable depending on the weather. Please bring a torch.

Please Note:

All attendees including adults accompanying children, all children including those under 5yrs and infants must have an entry ticket.
Tickets are free for children under 5yrs old and infants.
Groups may be up to 25 people.

FAQs

Is there a minimum age requirement?

This activity is suitable for school aged children, teenagers and adults. Children under 16 years of age must be accompanied by a supervising adult who has a ticket. (Please note age requirements are a guide only). Tickets are required for all children, including those under five years old and infants.

What do I need to bring?

You will need sturdy shoes, appropriate clothing and protection for the weather, water and your own transport from the Bunurong Environment Centre in Inverloch to the field site.

What if the weather is bad?

Our activities go ahead if it is drizzling. However, if the weather conditions pose a threat to the safety of participants we will cancel and refund your ticket fee. In this event, we will email you so please monitor your email if the weather is bad.

When do bookings close?

Bookings close an hour before the event. However, if there are insufficient bookings, the session may be cancelled several days beforehand. So best to book early to make sure it happens.

What is the refund policy?

If we haven't sold enough tickets to cover our costs 24 hours prior to the event we will cancel the activity, email you and refund your money. We may also need to cancel this event if unforeseen circumstances mean our presenter is unable to come or the weather turns nasty. If we cancel the event, we provide a full refund. If you cancel your ticket, you will be entitled to a full refund provided you cancel at least 7 days before the event.

The website advises that tickets are available, but won't process my booking?

There are 25 tickets available for this session but the ratio of tickets available to adults/children/children under 5 is set within that total to ensure that everyone in the group is able to fully enjoy the session. If you are not able to process a booking it may be because the limit for tickets available for either children or children under 5 has already been reached. Please add your details, including the tickets you would like, to the Waitlist.

Yes, please add the details of the tickets you would like to purchase to the Waitlist - if tickets become available for this session, you will be notified. If there is strong demand, we may be able to schedule another session, please note that extra sessions cannot be guaranteed.
