Celebrating William Shakespeare 459th Birthday @ his place.

This is the tenth annual Poetry Sydney Shakespeare event that celebrates his life and work with performances, poetry and open readings. It is an inclusive community event and welcoming to all who share a passion for Shakespeare and would enjoy either participating, being in the audience and being entertained.

Held on the entire first-floor of the iconic Shakespeare Hotel, there will be performances in each of the four rooms and video art projected onto the adjacent building. Hosted by Tug Dumbly, a poet, performer, satirist and singer, songwriter.

The cast of characters are being confirmed, but we are excited to announce the inclusion of a special performance of Shakespeare on Piano, by the musical virtuoso Anton Koritni. John Maddox is a well known bass player from Sydney, and will be present Shakespearian inspired musical interpretations at intermission. Award winning puppeteer Lenka Muchová will be presenting Act 3 Scene 1, from Midsummer Night Summer Night's Dream. Peter Whitehead is an actor, theatre director, writer and dramaturg. He will be performing a selection of sonnets. Video art by dvd2u will be screened inside and projected outside.

Shakespeare Trivia will be hosted during the night with the prizes on offer.

Cast of characters:

Tug Dumbly is a Nowra-born poet and performer who has lived in Sydney since the last Ice Age. He has worked extensively in radio, venues and schools, and founded a couple of seminal live poetry nights in Sydney. His poems have appeared in many journals and newspapers and he has been shortlisted several times for major awards, including the Newcastle Poetry Prize (3 times), the Vice Chancellor’s Poetry Prize (twice) and the ACU Poetry Prize (2021). In 2020 he won the Booranga Poetry Prize. His first poetry collection, Son Songs, came out in 2018 through Flying Islands Books.

Anton Koritni is a pianist, composer and vocalist who draws on a wealth of experience, in many different genres. He creates a unique, contemporary-classical style that is dynamic and emotionally mature. Despite its technical nature, his music is easily accessible. https://www.antonkoritni.com/
