William Matheny and Darrin Bradbury
Event description
DOORS at 7:00pm
The best storytellers often aren’t the ones who have had the wildest experiences; they’re the ones who have experienced things we all have and can articulate them in a way we haven’t yet figured out ourselves. They give us a new vocabulary for talking about ourselves and our world. That’s the gift William Matheny presents to us.
Matheny, a West Virginia native and longtime multi-instrumentalist for Athens, Ohio, indie heroes Southeast Engine, first broke out on his own with 2017’s Strange Constellations, his debut 11-song solo collection. He would best be classed as a songwriter’s songwriter--the kind of composer who gets the melody just right every time, and the kind of lyricist whose turns of phrase bring an involuntary grin. Once you’ve heard his deft songcraft, you might feel cheated that you didn’t discover him sooner.
Darrin Bradbury
Darrin Bradbury’s lyrics span from characters drawn from a harden America to one of a kind reflections on the human condition. One part existential, one part spiritual he reaches audiences of all walks of life. No matter how high the stage Darrin’s live performance and lowers it to the ground meeting folks eye to eye with his ernest often humorous story telling.”
A favorite amongst Americana legends, outspoke admirers of his work include Sturgill Simpson, Margo Price, Wynona Judd, Todd Snider, John Moreland, The Milk Carton Kids, Langhorne Slim, Robert Earl Keen and American Aquarium. Many of whom he has shared the stage with on tour.
After 2 label releases with indie stalwart ANTI records (Tom Waits, Mavis Staples & The Milk Carton Kids) and 15 years of performing Darrin took a sabbatical from creative pursuits and formed the Non Profit 501c3 “The Beat” in early 2023.
The Beat focuses on working with those experiencing homelessness, Substance abuse disorder and chronic mental health issues. All
three of which Darrin has extensive experience with. To date The Beat has housed, sheltered or rehabilitated 30-45 some odd folks, has been featured on the cover of the Nashville Scene twice and Darrin himself has opened his own home to 6 folks he’s personally rehabilitated from encampments all around Nashville. They affectionately refer to their home as “hobo house.”
