Following on from July's Fireside Chat event with the brilliant and engaging Georgie Dent, Women in Media NSW invites you to hear from award-winning author Ginger Gorman and Dr. Carlene Mahoney over an evening of wine and snacks at Sydney's Song Kitchen this August.

They'll be sharing their insights in a conversation hosted by Edwina Bartholomew around social media, the do’s and don’ts of engaging, not engaging, online safety, and so much more.

Ginger Gorman is a fearless and multi-award-winning social justice journalist. In the course of her 16-year media career, she’s interviewed everyone from eminent scientists and artists to hardened criminals and vicious Internet trolls.

In 2013, Ginger and her family suffered the effects of online hate first-hand, and it was this experience that set Ginger on her professional journey into the world of trolls. In 2017 her series of articles on trolling for Fairfax newspapers in Australia went viral, and became some of the most read Australian stories of the year. She is now in demand as an expert on online hate, and has written and spoken extensively about trolling and social media self-defence in Australian and global contexts. Her first book, Troll Hunting, was published in February 2019.

She regularly writes stories, makes radio and TV for media outlets such as: news.com.au, Fairfax online, The Guardian, The Big Smoke and the ABC.

Dr Carlene Mahoney has over 25 years' experience in law enforcement, specialising in social media governance, corporate communications, policy development, cyber security, mental health, child protection and organised crime. An adjunct lecturer at the Australian Graduate School of Policing and Security, Charles Sturt University, her recent work has focussed on terrorism, online radicalisation and related cyber crimes.

Her background and experience includes consultancy across law enforcement agencies, government bodies, non-government organisations, sporting associations, social media service providers, academia and education departments.
