Homemade soil fertility made easy - Composting and Worm Farms
Event description
About half of what the average Australian household puts in the bin is actually compostable organic matter! This has devastating environmental and economic consequences; however, flip it round and we can see this as a great opportunity to repurpose the problem into a simple solution (hello nutrient dense compost to return to your soil!)
Once in landfill, organic matter releases harmful methane, a greenhouse gas 25 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. In addition to contributing significantly to Australia’s production of greenhouse gases, this organic matter mixes with heavy metals in landfill, becoming a toxic sludge which contributes to the pollution of groundwater.
Turning your food scraps into garden gold is easy peasy and super effective in renewing soil health, preventing the production of methane and has the added benefit of allowing you to feel the immense satisfaction of participating in the process and connecting better with your food and the natural world. Wink Linsay will explore options not only to help you reduce your food waste and convert your scraps into something useful, but also techniques to increase soil fertility and soil health in your backyard.
