FAQs

  • What does Sonnwendfeier mean and why do we celebrate it?

Sonnwendfeier (pronounced zon-vent-fy-er) is a German word that refers to a solstice celebration, marking the turning point of the sun. In our community, it celebrates the winter solstice, the shortest day and longest night of the year, traditionally with a bonfire, food and time spent together.

Sonnwendfeier is one of several traditional festivals we celebrate as part of our German heritage.

Our community has its roots in Germany and this continues to shape who we are today. When the early Templers arrived in Australia, they brought traditions that helped them stay connected to one another and to where they came from.

Festivals like Sommerfest, Sonnwendfeier, Oktoberfest and Adventsfeier have been part of our community since those early days. They bring people together and create a sense of continuity across generations. While the names may feel unfamiliar at first, we’ve chosen to keep them to honour our origins and preserve their meaning.

These celebrations are open to everyone who would like to be part of them.
