WORDCRAFT IN THE HILLS
Celebrate humanity, raw and in process

“Melbourne’s premier open mic” is coming to the Bunurong Amphitheatre in Emerald Lake Park, for one big day of stories, song and creative expression under our open sky.

These are noisy, divided times, which is exactly why we need places to gather, listen and be human together.

ART is at the heART of the eARTh! So let's make some in an AMPITHEATRE.

Come and remember what it means to sit in circle and share stories. What a magical memory in the making!

Whether you’re a Wordcraft regular or this is your first time, this one’s special. We’ve built it as a proper day out, so pack a cushion, a hat and whatever you’ve got to share: poems, songs, instruments, dances, your best cover or your finest shower freestyle.

We want stories of love and whimsy, desire and heartache, grief and joy. We want your HUMANITY.

Your host is national award-winning poet Wren Rapture, with a crew of sound, photography and production folk making it all come alive. And yes, there’ll be a mic and proper amplified sound ;)

You are invited.

KEY INFO

  • How it works: Every name goes in the hat, and each performer gets five minutes to cast their spell.

  • Alcohol and substance free.

  • Age guidance: Families are so welcome! This is an uncensored open stage, though, so expect strong language and mature themes. We recommend it for ages 12 and up, and trust parents and carers to make the call. Questions? Just ask. Refunds aren’t available for change of mind on the day.

  • Community agreement: Be kind. No hate speech. Every story and point of view is welcome to sit side by side in peace. That’s the whole point.

  • Leave no trace: Bins will be on site.

  • Stay in the loop: More details will land in your inbox closer to the day.

    Everything You Need to Know

**Getting there** **Where exactly is the amphitheatre?** The Bunurong Amphitheatre is inside Emerald Lake Park, Emerald. [Add the nearest entrance and car park, and a map link.] **Is there parking? Can I get there by public transport?** You can park at the Emerald Lake Car Park or at Nobellius Heritage Car Park. Alternatively up in the Emerald Village near IGA and walk down. The Puffing Billy line stops at Emerald Lake station [check timetables for the day], or carpooling is encouraged. **Is it accessible?** We want everyone to feel welcome, so here’s an honest picture of the space. The Bunurong Amphitheatre is set into a hillside in Emerald Lake Park. There are no ramps up to the amphitheatre or down into the seating area, and the ground is grass and wooden sleepers, which can be uneven or slippery if it’s been wet. Performing: If the stage isn’t accessible for you, we’ll bring the mic to you. A roaming mic means you can perform from wherever you’re most comfortable. Seating: The seating is on earth terraces, so bring a cushion or a chair if you need one. We’ll keep a flat area at the top/edge reserved for anyone who needs it. Getting there: [Accessible parking is at ___, about ___ metres from the amphitheatre, along a ___ path.] Toilets: [The nearest accessible toilet is at ___, about ___ metres away.] Sensory: There’ll be amplified sound and a crowd throughout the day. A quieter space is available simply distancing from the theatre. Earplugs or headphones are a good idea if you’re noise-sensitive. Companion Card: We welcome Companion Card holders, and carers attend free. If you have specific needs or questions, email Wren at hello@wordcraftevents.com. We’d love to make a plan with you before the day. **On the day** **What time does it start and finish? Can I come and go?** As it is a public event, you are invited to join us from 1.30pm to settle in, enjoy the park and stagger gathering for the open mic's starting at 3pm, first performer at 3.15pm, wrap at 7pm. Your ticket is valid all day, so feel free to come and go. We will hang around until sundown for jams and chats! **What should I bring?** A cushion or picnic rug, a hat, sunscreen, water, layers (the hills get cool), snacks, and anything you'd like to share. Including poetry, songs, instruments and toys! **Will there be food and water?** [Food trucks, BYO picnic, or both.] Remember it's alcohol and substance-free. We all have a responsibility to the land and our community members, please respect this. **What happens if it rains?** Depending on the day, we will have a postponement date, or go ahead regardless. We'll email ticket holders by midday on the day if anything changes. Refunds will be available if the postponement date is not suitable for you. **Are there toilets?** Yes, public toilets are available in the park. **Can I bring my dog?** No dogs, please. With amplified sound and a big crowd, it’s not the comfiest day for our furry friends. Assistance animals are always welcome. **Performing** **How do I sign up to perform?** Pop your name in the hat on arrival. Names are drawn throughout the event. **Do I have to perform?** Not at all! There is never an expectation to perform. The space cannot exist without an audience! Come soak up the art and support the humans sharing their hearts. **How long do I get?** Five minutes. We'll ring the bell when your time's nearly up. **What can I perform?** Poetry, spoken word, song, music, dance, comedy, storytelling, covers, works in progress. If it's art, it's welcome. **Is there a guarantee I'll get on?** We'll do our best to fit everyone in, but names are drawn from the hat, so it isn't guaranteed. **What sound gear is there?** A mic and amplified sound. More Info to come - be mindful we're in an ampitheatre! **I'm nervous. Is this for me?** Your nerves are valid and we love to nurture them xx You are absolutely in the right place, even just to witness. Wordcraft is a warm and supportive community, and lots of people share for the first time with us. It's one of our proudest values - welcoming the first timer with open and loving arms! **Tickets** **Can I get a refund?** Request your refund via the appropriate channels and Wren will be in touch. Note that no refunds for change of mind on the day. **Can I transfer my ticket?** Yes, email Wren and contact details of other patron. **Can kids come?** We recommend this event for ages 12 and up, because performers share uncensored. Parents and carers can make the call for their own kids. Please note that children from 12-15 come free, we ask that you communicate with Wren prior if you are bringing children. **What if I can't afford a ticket?** Email Wren and we'll work something out. Nobody should miss out because money's tight. **Will there be photos or filming?** Yes, Belle Fitzgerald will be photographing the day, and we may film some sets. If you'd rather not be photographed, simply let us know on the day.
