Writing for Picture Books – a practical hands-on workshop in multimodal narratives.

This workshop will focus on the elements of a successful picture book. Learn to enhance structure, story arc and ideas generation when writing for illustrated and read-aloud stories. Create a brilliant first line and master the important first page. Write a concise narrative while allowing the visuals to expand and enhance the verbal narrative.

    

Learning outcomes

In this workshop, participants will learn about:

  • Understanding the key elements of classic picture books
  • Understanding your audience
  • How to write a book that will appeal to a young audience AND excite the reader

       

Format

This is a hybrid workshop with a focus on writing craft; it will be held in-person at State Library of Queensland and live streamed to an online audience via Zoom. This workshop is suitable for Children's Picture Book writers of all level, ages and backgrounds.

   

About Shannon

Shannon Horsfall has a PhD in Creative Writing and is a sessional academic in the School of Business and Creative Industries at the University of the Sunshine Coast. She is the award-winning author-illustrator of picturebooks Was Not Me and Nomax (both HarperCollins), and the illustrator of Dear Santa (Scholastic), My Unicorn Farts Glitter (Hachette), Once, I Munched a Mango (SLQ) and Jack Changes the Game (Australian Federal Police and QWC). She has also published short stories, poetry and flash fiction and teaches Creative Writing at University of the Sunshine Coast.
