Event description

This online Working Group will focus on the topic of “The Secret to Building Successful Teams That Perform When the Pressure Is On”

How often do you walk on eggshells?
Do you avoid confrontation when you know you should speak up?
Alternatively, when you speak up strongly, do you drive the conversation into one of deflection and defensiveness?

These uncomfortable situations can happen daily but are particularly awkward when the pressure is on.
Not only are the conversations unconstructive, they are likely to have a lasting detrimental impact on your team. To overcome this, you need to build your Conversational Capacity.
Conversational Capacity, based on Craig Weber’s book of the same name, is the ability for individuals and teams to have “Constructive, learning focused dialogue on difficult subjects in challenging circumstances and across boundaries”.
It’s about getting enough information on the table through a balance of Candour and Curiosity, that enables people to make informed decisions. It’s not about agreeing, it’s about learning about what to do next to make progress on tough issues. High Conversational Capacity also requires an understanding of our “Win” and Minimise tendencies that can very quickly draw us into Fight or Flight mode, and what our individual triggers are that push us in these directions.

A team with high Conversational Capacity can put its most troubling, divisive and painful work on the table and do really good work on it. A team with low Conversational Capacity can see itself getting derailed about a minor difference of opinion.

A team that can’t talk about its most pressing issues productively isn’t really a team at all. It’s just a group of people who can’t work together when it counts; when the pressure is on!

For a taster, listen to this podcast interview with Craig Weber.

Brendan’s 90 mins session will provide a snapshot of what Conversational Capacity is and why it’s so important to teams, business, families and the broader community.

Brendan Croucher, from Footbridge Consulting, is on a mission to help build Healthy, Engaged and Adaptive organisations and communities.

A fundamental part of his work is helping them build Conversational Capacity® – the ability to engage in constructive, learning-focused dialogue about difficult subjects and in challenging circumstances. Based on the bestselling book by author Craig Weber, Conversational Capacity is a vital competence for both leadership and collective performance. It sits at the core of increasing engagement within individuals, teams, and entire organisations who are, to use the Gallup definition, “highly involved in, enthusiastic about, and committed to their work and workplace.”

Brendan’s interactive session will focus on providing a new lens through which to view the importance of engagement, the situations in which it matters most, and actionable suggestions for how we can increase it.

Brendan’s client group includes BHP, Brisbane Broncos, Rio Tinto, Boeing, Anglo American, RSPCA Qld and AGL
