Working Group | Safety Leadership

Event description

To develop a positive safety culture in your business, you need to demonstrate strong safety leadership.

Safety leadership is influencing others to adopt health and safety as an important work goal. Through leading by example in the workplace, team leaders, managers and executives can:

  • help build workers safety knowledge and motivation
  • increase compliance with safety rules
  • encourage proactive safety behaviours.

This working group will address safety leadership from both ends of the spectrum:

  1. How to learn and grow when things go wrong
  2. How to build Human Organisational performance into your workplace culture

Despite our best intents, we may still have incidents. It is how we lead the recovery from such incidents that will shape our safety culture. We will learn how to address ‘Enforceable Undertakings’ (EU) to achieve favourable outcomes.

Human and Organisational Performance is a new way of thinking about how we can improve work.
It is based on the premise that humans are error prone and that if we expect people to do things right all the time, we are most likely going to be disappointed.
It’s about understanding how humans perform and how we can build systems that are more error tolerant.
For many years we have tried to make workers “care more” and “pay more attention” to what they are doing so that they won’t make mistakes.
What if we realised that many of the conditions that led to failure were not identified in our standard hazard analysis tools?

Through our workshop we may discuss:

  • How to generate positive outcomes from adverse events
  • How does human behaviour impact the issue?
  • Are we taking the time to learn before we act?
  • How can we make our workplace safer?

We will have a couple of presenters on the day and ample time to discuss Safety Leadership in detail with your peers across multiple industries.

We will also have a tour of the Century Yuasa Battery facility.

In this working group, we will explore how to make our business safer through human behavioural change and overcoming adversity in a positive way.
