Supporting children who have experienced trauma: Restoring Safety, Attachment and Control

A two-day tertiary course that provides advanced knowledge and skills for staff to undertake therapeutic work with children including, comprehensive risk assessment where children are at risk due to family and domestic violence.

Participants will also learn how to collaboratively safety plan and manage risk inclusive of how to contribute to a Multi-Agency Case Management Meeting (MACM).

This course utilises current child development frameworks and has been developed in line with National Competency CHCDFV002 Provide Support to Children Affected by Domestic and Family Violence

Outcomes of Learning

Establish confidence and rapport with children.
Ability to utilise several therapeutic tools when supporting children
Determining the impacts to child and whole of family functioning due to FDV.
Explore issues and develop safety plans
Provide support, advocacy, and information

Redefining FDV and coercive control
Developmental stages and impacts of FDV on children
Understanding Trauma and Trauma Informed Practice
Creating safety through a Trauma Informed child session
Introduction to child-centred approaches

Day Two Overview

4 stages to structured professional judgement when assessing risk
FDV informed language and documentation
Therapeutic Tools:

Narrative approaches to supporting children FDV
Play therapy approaches to supporting children affected by FDV
Art therapy approaches to supporting children affected by FDV
Attachment based activities to support strengthening of non-offending parent and child bond
Crisis therapeutic intervention in supporting children during a trauma response

Adopting self-care strategies when exposed to FDV

This training is suitable for anyone working with children impacted by trauma and family and domestic violence.
