Working with Autism
Event description
Presented by Marymead's Autism Centre
While most people know something about autism, they do not necessarily understand how it affects both individuals and their support structures. This makes it hard for them to recognise autism and communicate appropriately with individuals and their families. It also means they may not know how to adapt their behaviour and their services to support people on the spectrum.
Some of the benefits of attending the training are as follows:
- gain an increased understanding of the autism spectrum and be able to identify the main areas of difference between individuals
- understand that autism affects people in different ways
- learn to simplify communication
- to clarify the differences between a meltdown and a tantrum, and to respond accordingly
- identify differences in how people on the spectrum may process information, in particular, sensory
- understand the effect of increased anxiety for people on the spectrum
- understand the impact of autism on families
- develop strategies to create a positive environment for both children and their families
