Safe men, safe communities: A sector response to gendered violence forum

Due to the topic and purpose of the forum, this event is exclusively for NADA members and will be held in person.

Capacity:

The total capacity, including attendees, staff, and facilitators, is limited to 85-90 participants. 

Overview:
Contribute to a crucial discussion on developing a sector-wide response addressing working with men who use violence. This event provides an opportunity to hear about current approaches and perspectives from the alcohol and other drug, domestic and family violence, and men’s behavior change sectors. Participants will engage in small group consultations to reflect on the intersections of substance use, mental health, and violence. You will have the chance to share your insights on the sector's role, explore compatible approaches, and discuss the support and resources needed for effectively addressing violence in intimate and family relationships.

Presenters:

- Rodney Vlais (they/them): A writer, trainer, and change agent with over 20 years of experience in domestic and family violence. Rodney has played a pivotal role in developing collaborative, integrated approaches for the AOD and domestic violence sectors. They were instrumental in creating the NADA Practice Resource on engaging men who perpetrate domestic violence within the AOD treatment context and have delivered valuable training to NADA members.

- Professor Susan Heward-Belle: From the School of Education and Social Work at Sydney University, Sue is a leading researcher in domestic and family violence with 30 years of experience. Her work includes extensive research on the fathering experiences of domestically violent men and advancing gender-equitable practices. Sue’s expertise in domestic violence and child protection is highly regarded, and she focuses on developing socially just approaches that counter mother blaming.

Who Should Attend?

This forum is open to frontline staff, team leaders, and managers of NADA member services, as well as contracted staff such as clinical and specialized supervisors. We also encourage staff involved in nursing, peer work, intake, Aboriginal AOD work, and consumer engagement/advisory roles to attend.

- The forum will not be recorded; it will be a live, in-person session.
