Working with men who use domestic, family and sexualised violence in AOD service contexts
Event description
- Two-day Training Event
- Arrival from 8.30am onwards for a 9.15am start with a 4pm finish
Overview
Understand the principles and best practice approaches and techniques for working with men accessing AOD services, who use violent and coercively controlling behaviours in their relationships with partners, friends and family.
This training is the NADA resource developed in response to the sector’s requests for response frameworks and practice principles for AOD Services working with men. The training draws on these principles with a focus on reflection and skills required to confidently have safe, non-collusive conversations with men about their use of violent behaviours. Rodney shares strategies for facilitating change-talk, demonstrating selective empathy and responding to narratives used to justify the use of violence. It will also generate awareness of the beliefs and social drivers of domestic and family violence bound to facilitate thought-provoking discussions.
Facilitator
Rodney Vlais is a men’s change facilitator and change advocate. They have previously delivered this popular training for NADA and recently presented at the NADA ‘Safe Men Safe Communities’ forum and sector consultation. Two-days is barely enough to cover the depth of Rodney’s knowledge and thoughtful perspectives which they have contributed to the development of the MARAM Framework in Victoria and increasing the cross-sector capacity of services across Australia.
Learning outcomes
The training unpacks men’s use of violence as it provides participants with the crucial knowledge, skills and understanding required to ensure that our approach to raising, exploring and responding are safe and effective.
