Workshop #1 “Frailing the Ukulele” with Tomahawkin’ Fred (TAS)
Event description
Tomahawkin' Fred (from Ruby & The Roundabouts) will be hosting a workshop on the clawhammer/ frailing technique. Clawhammer is an old and beautiful playing technique that probably comes from West Africa and is used extensively in "old-time" banjo playing, a style that developed in 18th and 19th century America and is now closely associated with Appalachian music. It’s highly rhythmic technique that can work beautifully in both barn-burners and ballads. Best of all, it’s a natural fit for the ukulele.
Fred will teach two songs as part of the frailing the ukulele workshop, and Ruby & The Roundabouts will feature the songs during their set at the Saturday night concert. The songs are big singalong gospel and shanty style pieces with two simple but effective vocal harmony lines taught in concert.
