SEMPER DOWLAND - the Annual AVdGS Workshop 2026

Fri 6 eve to Mon 9, March 2026 at Castlemaine Steiner School, 11 Rilens Road, Muckleford Castlemaine

The 2026 AVdGS annual viol school will be held in the beautiful bush setting of Castlemaine Steiner School. Viol players of all levels are welcome. Beginner and part-time enrolment by application.

This year marks 400 years since the death of John Dowland, one of England’s most expressive and influential composers. Across the weekend, students will have the chance to explore Dowland’s world of melancholy songs and consort music. And don’t fret - we will still save time to indulge in our beloved fantasias!

The school fee is $470 full price and $370 for all concession excluding Seniors.

The Australian Viola da Gamba Society was incorporated on 23 June 2000. We hold an annual workshop on the long weekend in March in various locations and produce a regular newsletter. Please get in touch via info.avdgs@gmail.com

The viola da gamba (Italian: [ˈvjɔːla da (ɡ)ˈɡamba, viˈɔːla -]), or viol, or informally gamba, is a bowed and fretted string instrument that is played da gamba (i.e. "on the leg").[a] It is distinct from the later violin, or viola da braccio; and it is any one of the earlier viol family of bowed, fretted, and stringed instruments with hollow wooden bodies and pegboxes where the tension on the strings can be increased or decreased to adjust the pitch of each of the strings.[1] Although treble, tenor and bass were most commonly used, viols came in different sizes, including pardessus (high treble, developed in 18th century), treble, alto, small tenor, tenor, bass and contrabass (called violone).[1]
