Event description

Join us in this composting laboratory. Let's dive into circular organic  waste management and how composting can be an effective strategy not only for reducing waste that ends up in landfills but also De-composting als a natural process and  lifestyle. We will assess how much waste we create as individuals or communities and create a compost in the garden to observe over the next few weeks. We will intensively learn about the closed loop, compost as a living organism, how to properly set up and care for compost, and how a rapid composter works.  

What you can expect:

  • compost as a process of recycling nature
  • Basic elements of a compost and its process 
  • What happens inside a compost heap
  • Ultimate products found in a compost 
  • composting on an everyday scale

Materials/Homework:

  • bring gloves if you prefer working with them.
  • All other tools for the workshop  will be provided
  • As we would mostly work outdoors, wear suitable shoes and clothes

Homework : collect  your individual snack, lunch, breakfast  etc. organic waste from two days  Kitchen scale two days before the workshop and bring to the Workshop.

For whom is this workshop suitable?

Anyone curious about  creating “living soil” and managing waste. You don't need any pre knowledge on this. Participation is free and open to all. Priority will be given to BIPOCs.  Since attendance is limited, registration is needed.

After the Workshop:

Follow-up 1. Weekly meeting in our compost hub after the Workshop

Follow-up 2. Complications and concerns

We will take a peak into downsides of community/individual composting in urban areas and share composting and sustainability tips, tricks, questions, and concerns

Follow-up 3. compare end results in one month 

How does the compost look? How does it smell?  What composted fastest? What composted slowest, or not at all?  What combination was best? Spread the compost throughout the garden beds and mulch with a layer of leaves to put the garden to bed for the winter season.

Facilitator:

FETEWEI TAREKEGN
is an artist, Urban gardener, creator and host of a radio show focused on the experience of migration and migrations to the western world. Born and raised in Ethiopia, He has a degree in Agriculture from an Agricultural University in Ethiopia in the mid-2000s. He moved to Germany  for further studies in Environmental protection and food production in a university near Stuttgart. He has lived in Berlin since 2015 pursuing new ways of creating sustainable urban spaces that can foster gardening & greenery and promote intercultural connections. He consults various projects in this field and produces radio shows and documentaries on this and many other subjects.
