Who is this course for?
For community-based exercise providers, fitness instructors, allied health registered nurses and other health professionals working with older people in the Mid North Coast Local Health District. This workshop will help you tailor exercise programs (including strength, balance and flexibility) for falls prevention.
About this course
This course will equip community-based exercise providers, fitness instructors, allied health, registered nurses and other health professionals with important information to guide the provision of appropriate falls prevention physical activity and exercise programs for older people. Topics to be covered include the social and economic issues of falls, risk factors for falls, physiological consequences of ageing, biomechanical and physiological principles of balance, and effective falls prevention strategies.
In undertaking the course, participants will be trained to develop safe and effective community exercise programs for older adults. Through structured learning tasks across a number of different learning formats, participants will be able to identify, develop, demonstrate and implement evidence-based exercises to enhance physical and functional capacity and prevent falls and fall-related injury.
Online learning modules
Participants will be required to complete 6 online learning modules. Access to the online modules is granted upon registration and is to be completed prior to the face-to-face practical workshop.
Face-to-face Workshop:
The 3.5 hour face-to-face practical session will include falls risk screening, case study discussions, exercise demonstrations and an opportunity to develop and present an exercise program, the program includes:
- An overview of the issue of falls in older people
- Understanding balance and ageing
- Evidence-based fall prevention exercises
- Developing fall prevention programs
A certificate will be provided after completion of the workshop which can be used to claim continuing professional development points.
