Tale of the Wolf

When I was sixteen, my Mother played me a recording of Jeffery Masson’s The Freud Diaries, about Freud’s suppression of the Seduction Theory, which led Freud to develop his theory of Hysteria. Tale of the wolf reimagines Little Red Riding Hood from a survivor’s point of view. It speaks back to Freud's theory of Hysteria, through the mouth of the wolf, a mythic figure of transformation that predates psychoanalysis. This development adapts the performance set and dramaturgy for the unique Peacock theatre space at Salamanca Arts Centre where it is programmed in late December 2026.

The performance was first developed in residence at Odin Teatret within Holstebro Festuge, part of European Capital of Culture celebrations Aarus 2017. Odin Teatret, directed by Eugenio Barba, founded the historic field of theatre anthropology. Supported by Inner West Council the performance was presented as a work in progress at Teatr Brama’s Human Mosaic Festival 2018. Set designer Lucy Watson, dramaturg Adeeb Razzouk, and lighting designer Jaime Petersen with Institute of Luck developed the performance for Sydney Fringe Festival 2023.

Content warnings

This uses biological metaphors that connect the survivor’s body, voice and wild nature. This is a hopeful message that reflects our place in ecology. Although this is an adaptation of a fairytale, it does concern trauma. Appropriate supports are recommended if its themes are triggering 1800RESPECT, Lifeline and Beyond Blue.
