Jarochicanos

Jarochicanos was born out of the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago in 2008 as a youth workshop with the desire to learn the Afro-Indigenous musical tradition from Veracruz, Mexico called Son Jarocho. Throughout the years Jarochicanos evolved into a collective that carries out numerous community-based projects that utilize Son Jarocho as its tool such as: the teaching of multigenerational Son Jarocho musical workshops, the organizing of traditional fandango community celebrations, the facilitation of educational presentations and performances, and the organizing of international cultural exchanges, amongst other initiatives. They have alsocontinuously brought music to local marches, protests, fundraisers and events as a form of community strength and spirit-lifting. The Jarochicanos' projects are a direct response to the uprooting of our communities’ cultural practices and historical knowledge. Jarochicanos strives to create spaces in our urban, American setting where the knowledge found in our cultural traditions can be shared, practiced, and remembered, for they have what we believe is the key to transforming our communities.
