Shunpike Percussion Sessions: Afro-Latin Rhythms with José Rojas
Event description
Join José Rojas and drummers from Shunpike Social Club for an exciting series of workshops! This course offers a solid introduction to Afro-Latin rhythms for players at any level, whilst also providing a fantastic skills development opportunity for experienced drummers and percussionists.
Yes, once again, Afro-Latin American percussion takes over the Shunpike sessions, with José Rojas from el Taller.
The featured instruments will be conga, bongó, cencerros, timbales, and guiros, always guided by the clave pattern as the rhythmic foundation. We will be joined by a pianist who will play some mambo and salsa, providing melodic context for percussionists, and creating a richer understanding of this vibrant music.
José hails from Chile and is not only a talented percussionist but also a passionate researcher and educator, deeply immersed in his subject. In these six sessions, we will explore the rhythmic patterns of the Afro-Cuban ensemble— the essential foundation for understanding salsa, mambo, and more. These is something for every player in this music, and these sessions will cater to all abilities and skill levels, offering in-depth learning for whatever stage you are at.
All percussion instruments will be provided. Some prior experience with hand drumming will be helpful, but if you’re a beginner—no worries! You will still benefit greatly from José’s expertise and passion for his craft.
