About the workshop:

Indulge yourself in this three-part workshop series where you will learn from experienced woodworker Theresa Darmody who will take you through the skills and techniques required to carve a functional spoon and a scoop using just a few tools! You will learn how to use a gouge, drawknife and carving knife enabling you to carve safely and efficiently. You will also become familiar with the direction of timber grain and learn how to work with the grain to achieve beautiful and lasting results, and have the opportunity to explore a range of finishing techniques to really made your works pop - some of the many tips and tricks to wood working that you'll be able to pick up from Theresa's years in the craft.

This 3 Week Wood Carving Course gives you the opportunity to work with a small group of 8 dedicated participants where you will get one-on-one assistance from Theresa and learn in a group environment to pick up valuable skills to give you the confidence to not only build on your skills but also be able to talk about your wood carving practice, tools and techniques to carry with you into future projects. The pace of the class allows you to build on your skills taught each week, finishing off with a class dedicated to learning the intricacies of finishing off your objects to a highly finished level.

Artisan workshops are designed to be accessible for those with no prior experience and an avenue to learn a new skill within a supportive environment. Join us in this workshop series with Theresa, and carve your own unique wooden spoon and scoop to appreciate in the years to come!

Weekly Overview:

Week 1 - Carve a spoon

Learn how to safely use the necessary tools such as a gouge, drawknife and carving knife.

Week 2 - Carve a scoop

Learn how to further develop skills and be introduced to spokeshave and scrapers for refined carving, sanding is completed this week in preparation for the final week.

Week 3: Finish your projects

You will have the opportunity to paint, scorch, burnish, seal and wax your creations to obtain the desired effect.

A carving knife and timber blanks can be purchased from Theresa if you would like to work on your own designs at home.

About the facilitator:

Theresa Darmody relocated to Brisbane 6 years ago as a painter seeking to include some sculptural pieces in an exhibition. She attended a carving workshop, which got her completely hooked on wood carving! Theresa’s paintbrushes and paints are now in storage and she finds herself carving every day. She enjoys making functional pieces such as spoons, combs and bowls as well as purely sculptural objects. Workshop Cancellation Policy:

Please note this workshop can be cancelled by artisan due to unforeseen circumstances or if minimum numbers are not reached - this decision is made between 2-7 days before the workshop date so don't delay in buying your ticket! In the event of the workshop being cancelled by artisan, participants will be refunded in full and as soon as possible.

Participant Cancellation Policy:

Workshops have limited spaces and involve preparation by the facilitator. Bookings cancelled up to two weeks prior to the start of the workshop may be refunded, but a 20% non-refundable administration fee will be deducted. Bookings cancelled within two weeks of the workshop commencing will NOT be refunded. Refunds are to be processed by the attendee through Humanitix.

Workshop Transfer Policy:

You may transfer your booking into an alternative workshop up to two weeks prior to the start of the workshop. Any difference in cost will be charged accordingly. Please endeavour to complete any transfers at least two weeks prior to the workshop.

You are also welcome to transfer your booking to another person prior to the workshop commencing. Please confirm this arrangement 24 hours prior to the workshop in writing to workshop@artisan.org.au.
