**Join Petite artist, Carmel Wallace in this workshop to create your own small scale coiled sculptural form.**

Taking inspiration from Carmel Wallace's work for Petite, Lone Pine Colony, which explores conflict and war from her family's perspective, you will create a small, coiled sculpture that honors a special person in your life. Wallace's small woven vessels take their starting point from the needles of the Gallipoli 'Lone Pine' that stands in Warrnambool Botanic Gardens as a memorial to those lost during the great war. In honoring her family's history, Wallace has created these vessels as repositories for her grandfather’s story using her hair (their common DNA) and fallen needles from that tree.

To create your vessel or object, bring along materials that have significance and resonance to, or for, the person you have chosen to honour. Materials could include a piece of clothing, a necklace, a bag, even a sock. They could be natural materials from a special plant or garden, manufactured materials like wire or rope or metal washers from a shed, even photographs or magazines you are happy to cut or tear. They could be materials picked up on a walk you took with the person you are honouring, or a combination of all of the above and more. The possibilities are endless, just think of the person and what best represents them.

The materials you choose will have vital importance to how you construct your sculpture and how they relate to the person you are honouring.

Carmel Wallace lives in Portland, Victoria, on Gunditjmara Country. Embracing sculpture, installation and printmaking, she explores the roles art can play in strengthening connections to place and developing environmental awareness. She holds a PhD in this field from Deakin University. Multi-disciplinary in approach, she often develops collaborative projects engaging the wider community and employs a variety of media, much of it recycled. Wallace has undertaken international and Australian residencies and public art commissions. A finalist in major awards, she won the 2019 Yering Station Sculpture Prize and was a commissioned artist for the 2022 Lorne Sculpture Biennale. Wallace also recently had a suite of work selected for The Beauty of Early Life, a major exhibition at ZKM, Karlsruhe, Germany.
