Join us for a special Diwali celebration at Wangaratta Art Gallery. Participate in special diya-making workshop with Indian-Australian artist Minaal Lawn.

Participants will learn about the meaning and role of diyas in Diwali traditions, then decorate terracotta diyas using traditional materials. The workshop will also explore symbolism, colour, memory and ritual through art-making.

Minaal Lawn is an Indian-Australian artist based in Central Victoria on Dja Dja Wurrung Country. Working primarily in ceramics, she creates sculptural forms distinguished by a restrained material palette, vibrant use of colour, and the repetition of small elements. Drawing on object symbolism, Hindu worship culture, and ritual aesthetics, her practice explores identity, devotion, and the transformative power of sustained making.

Lawn has presented solo exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Ballarat and Castlemaine Art Museum, and has exhibited widely across Australia. A finalist in numerous national art prizes, she has also collaborated across design and fashion, with her work featured in publications including Vogue, Design Anthology, and Architectural Digest.

Suitable for all ages including children with supervision, and no prior art-making experience is required.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its principal arts investment and advisory body. This project was also made possible by the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund, which supports the arts in regional and remote Australia.
