About the workshop:

In this workshop, Mary Elizabeth Barron will introduce you to the art of bobbin lacemaking, an off-loom weaving technique first developed in the late 1400’s. You will learn how to wind the bobbins and to create the basic stitches that are fundamental to all bobbin lace- braiding, twisting and winding lengths of thread to create your very own masterpiece of lace! The finished work will be small but intricate, and can be used as decoration, act as a bookmark, or even worn as a pendant or brooch. This workshop is your first step in becoming an expert in bobbin lacemaking.

Artisan workshops are designed to be accessible for those with no prior experience and an avenue to learn a new skill within a supportive environment. So book in with a friend, a workmate or come solo and make memories while learning a new craft! Join us in this workshop with Mary, and make a beautiful bobbin lace creation to appreciate in the years to come!

About the facilitator:

Mary Barron’s studio practice has included sewing, basketry and paper-making, but in recent years bobbin lace making has become her passion. The new Home of the Arts on the Gold Coast (HOTA) recently commissioned Mary to create a large-scale lace work for their opening exhibition, Solid Gold. Mary’s large scale works have been exhibited widely in Australia and overseas, and are featured in several national & international lace magazines. Her solo exhibition, Lace, shown at Gympie and Logan Art Galleries in 2020, consisted of large scaleworks made using thread created from recycled plastic packaging. Logan City Council has selected Mary to create a permanent public art installation in the heart of Beenleigh. Mary has been teaching craft based workshops for years, partnering with local councils and organisations such as the Queensland Spinners, Weavers & Fibre Artists to bring lace-making to the wider community.
