Portrait Masterclass

Join Jessica Ashton for a portrait painting workshop. Get ready for a day of portrait painting, working from a life model. Expand your understanding of portrait drawing, light and colour. 

Learn to capture a likeness through observation and shape simplification. Construct the head with an understanding of the skull form and good construction techniques. Design shadow shapes that enhance the form of the head and features. Learn to mix flesh colours.

Jessica will work through step-by-step demonstrations and help students individually with their artwork. 

Intermediate to advanced level. An equipment list will be sent to students prior to the workshop.

Jessica Ashton is a Sydney-based artist represented by Dickerson Gallery, Sydney and Grainger Gallery, Canberra. She has been a finalist in the Archibald Prize twice and a finalist in many art prizes including the Mosman Art Prize, Parliament Plein Air Prize and the Lethbridge Art Prize. Jessica recently won the Rower’s Landscape Prize judged by Ben Quilty. Her work is part of many private and public collections. Ashton taught at Julian Ashton Art School for more than ten years and teaches at the University of Technology and Production Art Department.

Lunch, coffee and other refreshments will be available for purchase from the Flaxton Gardens café and restaurant.

Workshop ticket includes entry to the competition exhibition.
