Thinking like an illustrator can assist you as an author to polish your work—even if you “can’t draw”.

Your manuscript is only the early stage of a picture book - thinking like an illustrator can make it more dynamic. In this workshop, you will learn how to manipulate the all-important word count, outline scenes of your story, breathe life into your pacing, and define the significant emotional moments. Through example and a bit of ‘hands-on’ we will discover how our stories benefit from various types of storyboarding and the creation of book dummies.

ABOUT JACQUE: Jacque Duffy has written twelve and illustrated thirteen children’s books, which have been acquired by the state Government and placed in schools and libraries, and health facilities. Her books, The Bear Said Please (2014) and ANZAC-The Story of a Little Goat (2015) are used in National Curriculum Grammar Strategies books alongside books by Mem Fox, Jackie French, Jeannie Baker, and Narelle Oliver. Jacque’s illustrative style is flexible and ranges from traditional to concept. She works in all mediums from watercolour to oil, to digital. She believes each story project deserves to be illustrated in a style that enhances without distraction. Her ‘fine’ artwork has won major awards and is in galleries and private collections around the world. She is an active member of SCBWI and various writing and illustrating organisations in Australia and Internationally. She is heavily involved in the literary and arts communities, attends and presents at conferences, festivals, television and radio interviews, she mentors and conducts workshops.
