JMI is excited to welcome GRAMMY-nominated, ARIA Award-winning pianist, composer and bandleader BARNEY McALL for an exclusive workshop on Thursday 8 October, 2-4pm.

With more than 100 albums to his name as a sideman and 28 albums as a leader, Barney McAll is one of Australia’s most accomplished and adventurous jazz musicians. His career has seen him work alongside artists including Gary Bartz, Dewey Redman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Maceo Parker and Sia, with performances taking him to renowned stages around the world, including the Village Vanguard and NPR’s Tiny Desk with Gary Bartz.

Recently returned from the UK after headlining Gilles Peterson’s We Out Here Festival with Gary Bartz, Barney brings his Non-Compliance Trio to JMI, featuring young drum sensation Ebs Daramola and bassist Elliot Parker.

This workshop offers an opportunity to hear directly from one of the country’s leading voices in contemporary jazz, exploring spontaneous composition, groove, improvisation and creative musical expression. Barney and the trio will share insights into their approach to making music in the moment, developing ideas collectively and finding freedom within an ensemble.
