World Environment Day Film Screening

Join us for a special World Environment Day film screening and community conversation exploring environmental activism and the power of local action, presented in partnership with Environmental Films Australia.

The evening will feature two inspiring short films, Outpicker and Forest Country followed by a conversation with guest speakers and opportunities for community connection and discussion.

Outpicker shares the story of a Chinese queer immigrant in Melbourne who discovers belonging, connection and purpose through community litter picking. Through small environmental acts, the film highlights the importance of community, inclusion and taking local action.

Forest Country is a powerful short documentary by Victorian filmmaker Lewi Haskins exploring the ongoing impacts of native forest logging in Victoria’s Yarra Ranges. Filmed over a year alongside activists, conservationists and ecologists, the film follows the fight to protect native forests and endangered wildlife, highlighting the importance of preserving these ecosystems for future generations.

The films offer both local and broader perspectives on environmental advocacy and activism, celebrating storytelling, community resilience and the many ways people can create positive change.

Following the screenings, attendees are invited to stay for a facilitated discussion with Lesley Le Luo and Jing from Outpicker, and Lewi Haskins from Forest Country, followed by light refreshments and the opportunity to connect with like-minded community members.

• Children aged 16+ are welcome but must be supervised by an adult at all times.

• We will be indoors for the duration of this session.

• Please bring your personal water bottle and coffee cup. We have limited dishware.

• We will provide light refreshments.

• If you're unwell on the day, please stay home to protect others.

This event takes place during Waring Wombat Kulin season. Waring is the longest of the Kulin seasons, lasting roughly from April to late July/early August, it’s the coolest period of the year with high rainfall and misty mornings. Waring (wombats) emerge from their burrows to enjoy the warmth of the sun and graze, a change from their summertime nocturnal behaviour. Waring burrowing behaviour has an important role in our natural ecosystems, aiding in improving soil health by cycling natural nutrients to the surface and softening compacted soils to allow seedlings to mix when they wouldn’t normally be able to.
