World-Leading Biomanufacturing - From Production of Meat to Biologic Drugs
Description
In 2019, a small team in Sydney set out to grow meat from animal cells. By 2025, the company, now called Vow, had launched cultivated quail into restaurants from Singapore to Swan Hill and along the way, built one of the largest, most sophisticated cell manufacturing platforms in the world for a fraction of the cost everyone predicted.
Designed for low-cost, high-volume food, the Vow platform has unlocked something else entirely and of far greater significance to society. Vow Founder George Peppou is now leading a spinout from Vow, applying the industrial discipline and technological innovations of Vow's world-leading cell-cultured food platform to the manufacture of advanced therapeutics.
In this seminar, George will trace the unlikely path from cultivated meat to therapeutic biologics. He will explain why food biomanufacturing turned out to be the right training ground for advanced therapeutics and outline what NSW's role could be in the next generation of advanced, industrial biomanufacturing – a research category in which Australia has previously excelled, only to allow overseas markets to use this expertise to gain a commercial production advantage.
About the Speaker

George Peppou
George Peppou is the Founder of Vow, an Australian food biotechnology company reinventing how the world makes meat. Combining cell biology, bioprocess engineering and culinary creativity, Vow develops cultured meat products that dramatically reduce land use, emissions and supply risk while unlocking entirely new categories of food. Vow is built entirely on R&D and manufacturing undertaken in New South Wales.
George now leads an advanced manufacturing spin-out from Vow, applying the same platform and manufacturing mindset to new, high value segments. His work sits at the intersection of biotech, venture building, strategy and regulation, partnering with investors, regulators and food companies around the world.
