    Event description

World Music Café celebrates its fourth anniversary with a vibrant 'Dinner & Show' event featuring Reunionese Maloya band, Salama, and global fusion ensemble Duende Indalo at the Mt Lawley Bowling Club Function Room on Friday 27 October 2023.

Salama, is a dynamic music and dance group that features Indian Ocean members from La Réunion, Mauritius, Seychelles, Madagascar, singing in Malagasy and Creole languages. Returning by popular demand, Salama is proud to be pioneering the sharing of their Maloya culture of freedom in Australia. Led by Muriel Hillion Toulcanon, Salama perform traditional Reunionese music and dance, born from slavery, developed clandestinely, and banned by authorities until as recently as late last century.  Expect vibrant acapella singing, swirling dances and dynamic percussion in this uplifting expression of joy and celebration.

Duende Indalo are an exciting global jazz fusion ensemble with wonderful high quality musicianship from guitarist Karl Hiller, bassist Roy Martinez, saxophonist Tony Borthwick, and percussionist Pavan Hari. They play an intriguing mix of world music, fusing flamenco, Middle Eastern jazz, and ambient soundscapes to create something wholly unique. Inspired by the likes of Dhafer Youssef, Antonio Forcione, and bass guitar mastery reminiscent of Jaco Pastorius, the instrumental group have recently recorded an album and are keen to share their new works with the World Music Café audience.

World Music Café is a social enterprise that provides economic and social connection for the crew members of new migrant and refugee backgrounds. A brilliant new catering partnership is being established in 2023 with CARAD, the Centre for Asylum Seekers, Refugees and Detainees, who create sumptuous banquets of Middle Eastern cuisine and provide valuable transitional employment opportunities for new people of refugee backgrounds arriving in Australia.

World Music Cafe is described as ‘An Oasis of Integration in Our Country’ by the UWA Centre for Social Impact and was a ‘Social Entrepreneur of the Year’ finalist in the Australian 2022 Third Sector Awards.

Given most shows sell out, patrons are encouraged to book early to avoid disappointment. Group table bookings are available.
