Event description

World Music Café celebrates its sixth anniversary with Australian world music icon Kavisha and the exciting new southern African band, Mahali, at the Mt Lawley Bowling Club Function Room on Friday 12 September 2025.

Kavisha Mazzella AM is a multi-award-winning Australian composer, singer-songwriter, folklorist, activist and choir leader whose music style has Mediterranean, gypsy and Celtic influences. She has an extraordinary voice and founded the Joys of the Women choir in Fremantle and currently leads the Lingua Madre Italo-Australian choir in Melbourne. Kavisha is a much-loved local artist that has built a highly successful national and international profile over several decades. She performed and advocated for World Music Café in it's first year to help to establish the cultural social enterprise (see SBS News story).

Back by popular demand after their last sell-out show, Mahali, is a sensational new band on the local world music scene. The band features charismatic gospel singer Mahali Selepe from Lesotho, who trained at the London Institute of Contemporary Music Performance and performed at the London Olympics as part of SAfricanto that sang with the legendary late Hugh Masekela. The band, Mahali also features joined by harmony singing sisters, plus a brilliant southern African rhythm section with Mahamudo Selemane on guitar and Percy Kalino on bass.

The World Music Café ‘Dinner & Show’ experience includes a delicious menu created by Venezuelan caterer, Tamara Rodriguez, and her Casa Latina team.

“There are so many good people that have shared the World Music Café social enterprise journey with us over the years and we are deeply grateful for their collaborative contributions,” said World Music Café facilitator, Jon Cope.

“World Music Café is a musical and culinary showcase of contemporary Australian culture and also supports our crew of newly arrived people to our country through local employment and social connection,” he said.

Established in 2019, World Music Café is a successful social enterprise that provides genuine economic and social inclusion for the WMC crew members of new migrant and refugee backgrounds.  Described by the UWA Centre for Social Impact as ‘An Oasis of Integration in Our Country’, World Music Café was a national ‘Social Entrepreneur of the Year’ finalist in the Australian Third Sector Awards 2022.

Given most shows sell out, patrons are encouraged to book early to avoid disappointment. Group table discounts are available, so book a group table together with friends or colleagues!
