Event description

World Music Café returns Friday 10 May with Australian-Chinese supergroup Dragon Odyssey and touring Reunionese star Alex Sautron.

World Music Café returns in 2024 with a spectacular 'Dinner & Show' concert featuring the exciting debut of new Australian-Chinese supergroup Dragon Odyssey, plus touring Reunionese Maloya musician, Alex Sautron, performing with members of Salama, at the Mt Lawley Bowling Club on Friday 10 May 2024.

Dragon Odyssey is an exciting new world music ensemble that blends the rich tapestry of traditional Chinese instruments including pipa, yang qin, gu zheng, erhu, with a slick Western rhythm section. The seven-piece band perform a complex and dynamic East-West fusion that transcends cultural boundaries and creates a spectacular sonic experience.

Axel Sautron from Reunion Island grew up surrounded by the captivating beats of Maloya. He later studied at the Reunionese Conservatoire under Maloya expert François Baptisto, mastering traditional percussion instruments like the roulèr, piker, sati, kayamb, and bobre. Now, a highly respected figure in Maloya music and culture, Axel is touring to Western Australia, performing with Salama, sharing the vibrant culture of Reunion Island.

Starting in May, the World Music Café ‘Dinner & Show’ experience is enhanced by a delicious new South American menu created Venezuelan caterer, Tamara Rodriguez and her team.

World Music Café is a social enterprise created in 2019 that provides economic and social connection for the crew members of new migrant and refugee backgrounds. It has been described as ‘An Oasis of Integration in Our Country’ by the UWA Centre for Social Impact and was a ‘Social Entrepreneur of the Year’ finalist in the Australian 2022 Third Sector Awards.

Given most shows sell out, patrons are encouraged to book early to avoid disappointment. Group table bookings are available.

KMAM acknowledges World Music Cafe project assistance by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its principal arts investment and advisory body, and former WMC social enterprise founding partners, Multicultural Futures and United in Diversity.
