World Soil Day Celebration
Event description
This year World Soil Day occurs on 5 December. Join us and special guests from Home Soil on 8 December to celebrate the importance of soil and to mark World Soil Day.
10 am: build a compost heap
To mark World Soil Day we’re getting practical by turning the Farm’s
garden trash into soil treasure. Always a fun day and expect to get your
hands dirty! A couple of fun facts from last time:
- we added microbiological brew (Lactobacillus)
- also added some dead carp donated by the Wetlands Ranger (and livestreamed by Costa).
- the temperature peaked at 72 degrees!
Volunteers needed and we’re always happy to share what we’re learning. Free compost available to plot-holders who help with the prep (shredding material, collecting chicken manure) and/or on the day.
12.30 pm: enjoy pizza
Weather permitting, we’ll be cooking pizza in our oven, relaxing and
kombucha-toasting to healthy soil. Please bring your own pizza toppings.
Bases, tomato and cheese provided.
1.30 pm: meet special guests Damian and Rachael from Home Soil
‘We grow interesting and super tasty veggies in positive ways!
Our garden is beyond organic and built on regenerative interconnected
systems that divert waste, build soil, and promote diversity both above
and below ground. We grow all sorts of lovely things, make lots of
beneficial biology rich compost, and save seed.
The philosophy at Home Soil is – grow diversity and manage habitat – its
as simple and complex as that! Come along to Canberra City Farm when we
talk about what we have been learning and how we manage our soil.’
Come for the day, or drop in.
