World Soil Day
Event description
Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities —Celebrating World Soil Day
So what’s the connection between healthy soils and food security and biodiversity in urban environments? Come to the Canberra City Farm as we mix up some practice and theory to start the conversation rolling on this question.
10 am—build a hot compost heap
We’re getting practical by turning the Farm’s garden trash into soil treasure. Always a fun day! Expect to get your hands dirty and learn about our min-Indore hot-composting method. A couple of fun facts from the compost heaps we built at our Happy-10th-Birthday Open Day.
we added microbiological brew (Lactobacillus)
also added lots of shredded couch grass and other weeds
plus most of the waste from our open day, including paper plates and bamboo cutlery
the temperature peaked at 74 degrees!
Volunteers needed. Free compost available to volunteers who help with the prep (shredding material, collecting chicken manure) and/or on the day.
12.30 pm—enjoy pizza
Weather permitting, we’ll be cooking pizza in our oven, relaxing and kombucha-toasting to healthy soil. Please bring your own pizza toppings. Sourdough bases (wheat), tomato and cheese provided.
Come for the day, or drop in.
When: Saturday 6 December 2025, 10 am – 1.30 pm
Who: All welcome!
