Queensland has now secured our share in the Federal Government’s landmark waste and resource recovery reforms. At this Business Breakfast we’ll be hearing from experts and the State Government on the economic headwinds impacting our economy but also on the optimistic outlook for Queensland and the programs underway to support the waste and resource recovery sector.

Following the Business Breakfast we’ve organised additional sessions on:

• QLD Government Waste Data Project (Presented by Dylan Walker)

  This session will outline a significant data project that DES has been coordinating. Waste Data External Visualisation: The project aims to support the current static waste data, system and financial components of Queensland's waste levy

• Workshop on the recently approved stewardship program administered by Battery Stewardship Council
  11:00am - 12:00noon
  In September 2020 the ACCC granted an authorisation enabling the establishment of the Battery Stewardship Council (BSC) to operate a national scheme for managing expired batteries.
  
  The primary goal of the BSC is to implement a battery stewardship scheme in Australia that will significantly increase in battery collections and recycling that will commence 1 Jan 2022.
  
  Batteries imported by members of the scheme would attract a levy of four cents per 24 grams (the weight of an AA battery). Rebates would then be paid to recyclers to help offset the cost of collecting, sorting and processing expired batteries. Members of the scheme must agree to only deal with other accredited members along the supply chain. Stockpiled batteries will not be eligible for the Scheme, however, BSC does seek to work with industry to resolve existing battery stockpiles.
  
  To participate in the scheme and access rebates- collectors, sorters and processors of batteries must become accredited members.
  
  BSC is in process of developing accreditation guidelines and protocols.To hear more about their progress and what is required to become an accredited member for the Scheme, please join this session.

• Adelaide Timbrell (ANZ)
  Adelaide Timbrell is an economist in the ANZ research team with 7 years’ experience working with some of Australia’s leading companies, helping stakeholders understand and make use of economic information. Adelaide focuses on the Australian household sector, housing, property and retail trade.
  
  Presentation:Adelaide will discuss the current macroeconomic conditions in Australia, including impacts of government stimulus to combat the coronavirus pandemic, key factors driving Australian economic growth & the present challenges amongst other items.
  
  
• Michele Bauer (DSDILGP)
  Michele Bauer is Deputy Director-General, State Development Group in the Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning. Michele has extensive experience in economic development portfolios with a focus on industry development, investment attraction and regional infrastructure programs.
  
  Presentation: The Queensland Government has made a significant commitment to the development of the resource recovery, recycling and remanufacturing industries. Michele will outline the key actions being undertaken to support these industries to reduce waste going to landfill and by working with the Australian Government, support the national export bans of specific waste streams through the Queensland Recycling Modernisation Fund.
  
  
• Rose Read (NWRIC)
  Presentation: The National Waste and Recycling Industry Council (NWRIC) and Australian Council of Recycling (ACOR) have joined forces with the Commonwealth Government to improve Australia’s resource recovery standards and procedures to help reduce the amount of material going to landfill.
  
  Funded by the Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment (DAWE), NWRIC will be developing national performance standards (i.e. plastic, paper, metal, glass and organic outputs) for recycling facilities (including sorting, primary and secondary processors) and ACOR will be developing a national accreditation / certification program for Australian recyclers.
  

QLD Government Waste Data Project 

• Dylan Walker (DES)
  Dylan works in the Department of Environment and Science. His professional background is environmental and occupational health in local councils and state government, with a mix of technical, regulatory and policy experience. Dylan is currently a Director in the department’s Office of Resource Recovery. He’s responsible for the management of waste data and information and the implementation of the data, system and financial components of Queensland’s waste levy.
