WRIQ Prevention of Fires in Waste Stockpiles Consultation Workshops

This event has passed Register

Event description

The Waste Recycling Industry Queensland (WRIQ) is partnering with the Department of Environment and Science to develop a package of work to reduce fire risk at waste and recycling facilities. You can read more about this package here.

To help guide the development of this package WRIQ will be carrying out consultation activities with waste and resource recovery businesses and local councils.

WRIQ is seeking feedback on:

  • Current guidelines
  • Alternative approaches to how fire risk can be managed
  • Preferred methods of engagement and communication
  • Unintended consequences of the current guidelines
  • What training or additional support could be provided

You can access a copy of the current DES guidelines here.

These sessions are opened to anyone working in the waste or recycling sector, private business, local councils and consultants.

Seats are limited at each session.

  • Cairns | 20 May | 8:30am to 11:30am | Tank Art Centre, Collins Ave Edge Hill
  • Townsville | 1 June | 8:30 to 12.30pm | Railway Estate Community Centre
  • Rockhampton | 3 June | 8:30 to 12.30pm | Rockhampton Leagues Club
  • Bundaberg | 4 June | 8:30 to 12.30pm | Bundaberg Civic Centre & Supper Room

NB: The Department of Environment Science (DES) will be carrying out targeted consultation activities in the regions.

The Department of Environment and Science is currently developing an Organic Waste Action Plan (Action Plan), which will identify key actions from avoidance through to improved end-use management and market development opportunities.

These actions will also support the Queensland Government’s national commitments to implement the National Food Waste Strategy target to halve food waste by 2030 and implement actions in the National Waste Policy Action Plan to halve the amount of organic waste going to landfill by 2030.

DES will be consulting on the draft Organic Action Plan on 3 June and 11 June following the stockpiling workshops at the Rockhampton and Ipswich.

You can book a seat at these sessions through this webpage and the ticketing dropdown menu.

There is no cost to attend these sessions.
