As a waste material, asbestos has some unusual characteristics: it is a hazardous waste generated from across all of society rather than from a particular industry; its preferred fate is burial in landfill; and it is among the highest risk materials for waste industry employees to manage. As a result, asbestos poses a unique waste management challenge.*

This session will address the following topics specific to the waste and resource recovery industry:

visual identification of possible asbestos in waste (suitable for inspecting trucks)
safety precautions to take when possible asbestos is identified
ways the recycling industry can deal with possible exposure risks (e.g. air monitors, sprinklers, PPE at all times) in waste processing and recycling environments.
