Join us for the Write Links Workshop & meeting at the Qld Writers Centre, Level 2 State Library, on Saturday 4 July.
This is a free workshop meeting for financial Book Links members.
12:30pm: Editing: From First Page to Final Draft with Liane McDermott and Annaleise Byrd
This workshop is designed as a practical session and will provide:
• an overview of the different forms of editing (structural, copy/line editing, proofreading)
• an introduction to grammar, syntax and style and how you can improve your writing
• an understanding of the essential ingredients for compelling opening chapters
• tips on writing a killer first page.
With Book Links StoryArts Brisbane (BSAB) manuscript submissions and First Pages Live in mind, you are asked to bring along your manuscript so that you can apply practical tips, receive group feedback and strengthen your work.

Dr Liane McDermott
Dr Liane McDermott is a freelance editor and writer by night and a research academic by day. She specialises in editing children’s and young adult literature, offering supportive, insightful feedback to help authors develop their work. Alongside her research writing career, Liane has trained in creative writing and editing, completing postgraduate studies at QUT and UQ.

Annaleise Byrd
Annaleise Byrd’s debut middle-grade novel, Losing the Plot – a humorous portal fantasy set in the world of Grimms’ original fairytales – was published by Walker Books Australia in 2024. It was followed by a sequel, Down the Plot Hole, in 2025, along with her debut picture book, You Are Not a Pup!, with Hardie Grant Children’s Publishing. Annaleise works part-time for the Ipswich District Teacher-Librarian Network, where she is part of the editing team behind their beloved annual Book Week publication. She is a Readers Cup State Finals judge, a judge for the Kids’ Cancer Project’s Write a Book in a Day fundraiser, an Author Pen Pal, an active member of Book Links and Write Links, and a volunteer book reviewer for StoryLinks.
