Emiliana: A Revolution Cabaret
by Jessica Pena Torres
Directed by Anna Skidis Vargas
By day, Silvia is the upper middle class daughter of a renowned, Spanish-descendant doctor. By night, she is Emiliana, a cabaretera (dancer/sex worker) who worships Emiliano Zapata and fantasizes about fulfilling his revolutionary mission by giving her family's hacienda to local farmworkers. Inspired by the melodramas of Mexico's golden age of film and post-revolutionary politics, Emiliana recreates a 1940's Mexico City dance hall to address issues of social justice for Indigenous, femme and queer folks.
