Writing and Publishing Short Fiction with Daniel Ray

Master the art of writing, editing and publishing short fiction, with a focus on form and craft.

Short story writer Daniel Ray guides you through the principles of writing effective short fiction. In this workshop, participants will close-read some great examples of the short story form by writers such as Laura Jean McKay, Victoria Manifold and Amy Hempel, discussing aspects of craft - especially point of view. Participants will also participate in practical writing exercises, and learn the fundamentals of editing and publishing short fiction (with personal insights on how literary journals read and rank short story submissions). Walk away with a strong understanding of how to write, edit and publish your next short story.

• How craft (especially point of view) operates in short fiction.

• The process of editing, submitting and publishing short fiction.

Format

This is an online workshop with a focus on craft; it will be hosted via Zoom. This workshop is suitable for short fiction writers of all levels and writing backgrounds.
      

About Daniel

Daniel Ray lives and writes between Naarm and Queanbeyan. His short stories have been published in Griffith Review, Island, The Big Issue Fiction Edition, Short Fiction, Westerly, The Suburban Review, Voiceworks, and elsewhere. He has been twice shortlisted for the Griffith Review Emerging Voices Competition and was shortlisted for the 2026 Nillumbik Prize in Contemporary Writing. Daniel is Associate Editor at Short Fiction, and is a PhD candidate at La Trobe University, researching queerness, affect and literary style. Development of his debut novel, Cusp, has been supported by a Create NSW Grant, Roderick Centre Fellowship and Faber Academy Scholarship.
