Learn how to write Australian landscapes through a Gothic lens with WA author and KSP Writer-in-Residence Karleah Olson.

In this workshop, you will:

• Study published works to learn how this genre hooks readers and leaves a lasting impression

• Explore tropes and elements of the Gothic genre and how to apply these to an Australian setting

• Harness location, atmosphere, and cultural context to craft stories that are distinctly Australian yet universally chilling

• Put everything together with guided brainstorming and writing activities, with an opportunity to share.

About the Facilitator:

Karleah Olson is a Perth-based writer, and has recently completed her PhD at Edith Cowan University, where she studied Australian Coastal Gothic Literature. Her debut novel, A Wreck of Seabirds, was shortlisted for the 2023 Fogarty Literary Award, the 2025 CBCA Book of the Year Award, and the Western Australian Premier's Book Awards. Her second work, an Australian Gothic novella, Bloodwood, is set for publication in July 2026 with Night Parrot Press.
