Writing That Matters: Developing Functional Literacy Skills
Description
This practical CPD session explores how the English curriculum at Briarwood supports learners with SEND to develop meaningful writing and literacy skills that can be applied in everyday life. Participants will examine the progression from early mark-making and emergent writing through to sentence construction, functional literacy and, where appropriate, cursive handwriting.
The session will explore how approaches such as Colourful Semantics, structured writing activities and real-life literacy experiences can help pupils develop confidence, independence and purpose in their literacy learning. Staff will consider what effective writing provision looks like across different pathways and how functional literacy can prepare learners for greater participation in school, the community and adulthood.
This module has been accredited by the NCFE and can be considered when working towards the NCFE Award. Participants are required to complete five modules, including the mandatory module.
