John and Brittany
John Faye and Brittany Rotondo made their mark on the Philadelphia music scene in the 2010s as an unlikely punk / garage rock duo, taking their explosive chemistry from open mic stages, where they banged out their early tunes on acoustic guitars, to high-profile venues like the TLA, World Cafe Live, Stone Pony, Bowery Electric, and Mercury Lounge, where the ferocity of their potential as a full band came into vivid focus. With whirlwind successes including two “Coolest Song In The World” designations on Sirius XM’s Little Steven’s Underground Garage and airplay for their music video “Paper Planes” on MTV-U, John & Brittany were on the brink of bigger things.. until they weren’t.
The duo disbanded on the release date of their final EP - 2014's “Stories To Be Told” - but one of the songs on the record has always stuck in both their hearts and minds.
“La Tierra” - which translates to “The Land” in Spanish is an anthemic foot stomper rooted in the plight of working people and a commentary on the political winds they saw stirring in America even before the current regime arrived. After Faye used the song as the soundtrack on an Instagram reel he made as an “outlet for the rage” he felt after watching video after video of ICE abuses in Minnesota, Rotondo came to him with an idea. Re-release the song as a way to raise money for people impacted by the government policies that have far-overreached their stated goals and wreaked havoc in the streets of American cities. This acoustic set by John & Brittany will be their first public performance in twelve years. A donation from the event will benefit Juntos - a community-led Latine organization in South Philadelphia, fighting for the human
rights of workers, parents, youth, and immigrants.
Bruce Warren
During his first shift as a late-night/overnight volunteer DJ on WXPN some 30+ years ago, Bruce realized, after playing his first set of music (an Ornette Coleman song into Jerry Garcia), what he wanted to do for the rest of his life – be in radio.
