Wynnum Mangrove Bird Walk
Event description
Join us for an afternoon bird walk at high tide along the Wynnum Mangrove Board Walk, and enjoy spotting birds from the on-site bird hide. This event is free and open to LGBTQIA+ folks and allies of all experience levels.
What to Expect:
After arriving at the meeting spot close to the northern car park, your friendly hosts will briefly orientate you to our group and its aims. We kindly request you check in via QR code, and download the route for the day (including elevation date) via the free app Organic Maps.
To minimise disturbance to wildlife, your hosts will split you into two groups. Your friendly guides will assist beginners with bird spotting and identification. Group A will begin in the bird hide north from the car park, before commencing on the mangrove board walk. Group B will proceed to the board walk then loop back and conclude at the bird hide. The walk is 2.4km return.
Reconvening with all attendees in our initial meeting spot, you will have the opportunity to discuss your observations, clarify bird IDs and finalise any checklists.

Accessibility and Comfort:
There are no toilet facilities at the event site. The northern car park has two disability parking permit bays. Around the bird hide, wide paved paths with bench seating and a small picnic shelter are available. Beyond this, the sealed walkway transitions into a dirt track that connects to the mangrove boardwalk. During the highest tides, water may cover a short section of this track at the boardwalk entrance. For your safety and comfort, please wear enclosed footwear. We recommend wearing insect repellent and long-sleeved clothing to avoid uncomfortable bites! Please reach out if you have specific access needs or concerns.
About the Walk:
Imagine a single place where you can wander through open grasslands, bushland, tidal wetlands, and mangroves, with the bonus of a bird hide tucked away for quiet observation! That’s exactly what you’ll find on the shores of Moreton Bay, just south of the Port of Brisbane.
The mangrove boardwalk stretches for about 600 metres and changes character with the tide, revealing mudflats and feeding birds at low tide, then transforming into a serene waterway at high tide.
Between the bird hide, lagoon, surrounding bush and grassland, and the rich mangrove ecosystem, this site offers two habitats in one, and plenty of opportunities for birdwatchers and nature lovers alike. This month eBird users recorded up to 95 species.
